Los Fresnos, Texas, sits in the Rio Grande Valley, just a 40-minute drive from the Gulf Coast, in a region shaped daily by its proximity to the US-Mexico border. It's a place where the realities of immigration are not abstract policy debates but lived experience, woven into the fabric of daily life for the families and communities who call this borderland home.
On a Be The Neighbor trip to Los Fresnos, your group will stay at Southwest Good Samaritan Ministries, a Disciples of Christ ministry serving the region. Throughout the week, participants will learn about the immigrant journey and gain a firsthand understanding of what the US immigration system actually looks like for those navigating it. Your group will support local organizations and advocates who are organizing to be good neighbors to people on their immigrant journey, engaging in hands-on service and conversation that moves beyond headlines and politics to the human stories at the heart of this work. Participants will be invited to listen and learn from those most impacted, building a deeper understanding of the systemic realities shaping immigration today.
Your group will explore how the topics you're learning about relate to your own community and develop a plan for how you can continue this work when you get home. Be The Neighbor weeks are learning and launching trips, meaning participants will leave the week equipped to live lives of love, service, and justice in ways that are relational, sustainable, and dignity-affirming!
Be The Neighbor’s summer programming begins on Sunday evening and concludes on Friday morning. You may stay an additional night to explore see the city in this location for an additional $10 per person. Check out is 10 am Saturday morning.
