Chicago, Illinois, a city known for its rich cultural history, towering architecture, and beloved deep-dish pizza, is also a place where the impacts of industrialization and urban development are deeply felt. Built along the shores of Lake Michigan, Chicago’s waterways fueled its growth, but that same industrial success has led to significant environmental challenges. Pollution, resource depletion, and the effects of climate change have disproportionately impacted Black and Latinx communities in the city, leaving them to bear the brunt of toxic air, unsafe drinking water, and limited access to green spaces. In response, residents of these neighborhoods have come together to fight for environmental justice, advocating for clean air, safe water, and sustainable living conditions.

During a Be The Neighbor trip to Chicago, participants will examine how environmental issues are intertwined with racial and economic injustice. Groups may take part in a “toxic tour” of the city's Southwest side, where grassroots organizations are working to address the environmental harms that have plagued the area. In addition, groups will contribute to efforts of restoration and sustainability by volunteering at urban farms or connecting with congregations that have partnered with Faith In Place to form “green teams” focused on environmental advocacy. This trip offers a chance to not only witness the challenges Chicago faces but also support local initiatives striving to create a healthier and more just environment.
Be The Neighbor’s summer programming begins on Sunday evening and concludes on Friday morning. You may stay an additional night to explore see the city in this location for an additional $10 per person. Check out is 10 am Saturday morning.
